Humans versus Zombies: Athens

We're going to spend Fridays talking about some of the events we're going to have at Ratha Con and we're kicking it off with Humans versus Zombies: Athens doing a special game just for Ratha Con.

From HvZ: Athens' own website (http://hvzathens.com/), "Humans vs. Zombies (HvZ) is a campuswide week long game of modified tag. Humans try to survive a zombie outbreak, zombies try to eat (tag) and infect all the humans. Once a human has been infected, they join the zombie team. Humans may defend themselves using Nerf-approved firearms or by throwing a balled up sock."

With Ratha Con, we're going to have a smaller version. We only have one day and one building to work with so unfortunately we're not having a campus-wide, week-long game like HvZ: Athens normally provides. Instead we're going to have a game lasting for two to three hours in the space behind the convention center.

To any people who've played HvZ in the past, you know it's a blast. To anyone who hasn't played before and wants to give it a try at Ratha Con, you'll need a bandanna and a foam dart gun or some balled up socks, or no weapons at all and play as a zombie. More information on legal weapons can be found on their website and head over there for full rules, pictures and forums with notifications about their future games.

The masterminds behind HvZ: Athens are still deep in the planning phase of the game, in what they assure us is their secret headquarters hidden under the surface of the Earth, so there's little else we can tell you about what sort of game it might be. Regardless of what they come up with by Ratha Con, rest assured, it will be a great time for kids and adults alike.

Sandy Plunkett and the Wizard's Guild

Wednesdays we're going to be highlighting some of the artists and vendors that will be appearing at Ratha Con, and today we're going to kick it off with Sandy Plunkett and the Wizard's Guild.

Sandy Plunkett grew up in New York but has made Athens, Ohio his home. He has illustrated for multiple publications, including Marvel and DC comics, and various other venues like political cartoons. Plunkett has a book full of his sketches that you probably haven't seen in any comic or newspaper. The book is called "The World of a Wayward Comic Book Artist: the Private Sketchbooks of S. Plunkett" and is available for purchase from his website: http://www.plunkettart.com/

Plunkett's website also displays some of the gorgeous illustrations he's made over the years in the comic book style that we all know and love. He's also the creator of the awesome Ratha Con logo that we've come to know and love. As an artist with such an impressive history and amazing talent, who's set up shop in Athens, we are proud to welcome Sandy Plunkett to Ratha Con.

The Wizard's Guild is a gaming and comic book shop located in Athens, Ohio, at 19 West Washington St. It is the go-to gaming location for any person in Athens who has interest in trading card games, tabletop roleplaying games, or miniature war games, not to mention its wide collection of comic books and board games for sale.

If you're looking for something fun to do in Athens over the weekend, head over to the Wizard's Guild, where you will no doubt find some hobby of yours catered to along with a group of people there that share that hobby with you.

If you're looking to get in contact with the Wizard's Guild, their phone number is (740) 594-5300

The Avengers Movie Coming Out May 4th

In the weeks before Ratha Con begins in full, we're going to showcase, here and on Facebook, a variety of the events, artists, and vendors that will make up our convention. On Mondays, though, we're going to do something a little different.

Every Monday we will showcase one of a variety of events occurring in the Athens area or on the national scale that, while not connected to Ratha Con, we suspect will still be of interest to con-goers.

Today we're reminding everyone that the long-awaited Marvel comic film The Avengers is swooping into movie theaters starting Friday, May 4th 2012. The movie stars actors like Robert Downey, Jr as Iron Man, Chris Evans as Captain America, Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury. With a lineup of actors and superheroes like that, this movie has no other option but to be amazing.

The film's official website is http://marvel.com/avengers_movie/ and has available four different trailers of the movie, all of which we highly recommend. They're visually astounding, send a shiver up your spine and are a great way of livening up your Monday.

We expect to see you all at the theaters on May 4th.
